Most of the twentieth-century story is told by J ohn Hum e, a historian of tech- nology and architecture, which p erhap s exp lains why we have detailed descrip tions of the construction of the p resent new building and of library autom ation in his account. A recently retired librarian describes the very recent history of the library before two chap ters highlighting the library’s treasures. The first of these p resents ten exam p les of the best illustrated individual item s in the collection ranging from Hunter’s Psalter to the scrap books of the p oet Edwin Morgan. The second focuses on m ajor collections, such as those of the Scottish Theatre Archive, though the collection of m aterial relating to the m usic hall com edian Harry Lauder seem s to be have been considered too em barrassing to m ention.
