Charles Evans Hughes prepared his autobiographical notes between 1941 and 1945, drawing upon a prodigious memory and detailed memoranda written under his supervision during the 1930's by Henry C. Beerits, a young Princeton graduate. The notes, here superbly annotated by Danelski and Tulchin, and the Beerits memoranda became basic sources for subsequent Hughes scholar­ ship, principally Merlo Pusey's biography and Robert Wesser's study of the gubernatorial years. The autobiographical notes, according to Hughes, served not as memoirs, "but ... provide a body of facts for reference" (p. 2). They were not an apologia pro mea vita, designed to smite enemies or refute critics. Hughes disdained such polemical endeavors. Rather, he intended "to set down objectively the facts concerning forebearers and environment.... The recital may be interesting to my children and grandchildren and possibly may be of assistance to others who may wish accurate data" (p. 2).
