TY - JOUR AU1 - Green, David, E. AU2 - Blondin, George, A. AB - Abstract Direct energy coupling in mitochondria requires the participation of intrinsic ionophores. These protein-linked ionophores are now demonstrable and isolatable. The central phenomena of energy coupling, such as how uncouplers act, how coupling in cytochrome oxidase is mediated, and how ATP is synthesized, can be satisfactorily rationalized in terms of these intrinsic ionophores.
