Picture this: an engineer with a vague, traditionalist’s sense of Dickens sits at his desk while his wife (me) watches episode three of the new Great Expectations. ‘Get your fucking hands off me!’ a teenage boy yells as he pulls a knife on an older Black man. The engineer’s ears perk up. ‘You’re watching a Dickens adaptation?’ he asks. Cut to the next day, same setting, episode four. A woman lies on a bed blitzed out from smoking opium, her long white hair and rotting wedding dress in prominent focus. Lying next to her is a young Black woman, who takes the pipe from her hand and puts it to her own lips. ‘Is that Miss Havisham?’, the engineer asks. ‘Yes’. ‘And Estella?’ ‘Yes’. ‘They smoked opium?’ he asks incredulously. ‘They do now’. And so it goes with this six-part miniseries, which brazenly avows that it is no rev- erent, traditional affair.
