TY - JOUR AU - Wylde, Richard AB - There is a common picture of a pure scientist slaving away in a laboratory, who has a bright idea, makes a breakthrough, and 10 years later the world ends up with a better dishwasher. There is, of course, as much flow in the other direction. An improved dishwasher may clean glass better, reduce contamination and allow scientists to do delicate experiments that were otherwise impossible. For the last 15 years I have been trying to develop a family engineering business to provide equipment to scientists mainly physicists by using high-precision tool-making skills and technologies originally developed for injection moulding. In other words, I have tried to put engineering back into science.
