AB - A light‐guide plate (LGP) based on plano‐convex optical micro deflector (MD) has been designed and fabricated. An array of the MD elements which are part of the LGP, is fabricated on the LGP to control the direction of the emanating light. The MD element functions as “refractor” when the guided light is incident on the convex surface of the element. To confine the guided light, an array of micro reflectors (grooves) is molded on the back surface of the LGP. The LGP is used with only one prism sheet that functions as totally internal reflector. The new backlight unit shows an increase of 40% of luminance compared to that of the conventional type.
