TY - JOUR AU - Jensen, L P AB - The declared purpose of this book is to present an up-to-date review of venous disease in a short, yet comprehensive form. It is targeted at everyone from the vascular technologist and nurse to the vascular surgical specialist. Twenty-five authors have contributed to the 17 chapters. The book's ambition is not small and, unfortunately, is only partly fulfilled. The multiplicity of authors has results in very uneven presentations, with overlapping information in some chapters. The very broad target group has in some cases resulted in ‘chatty’ chapters, with lack of precision and content. Other chapters are excellent, for example those on epidemiology and newer methods of treating varicose veins. The main focus of the book is, indeed, varicose veins and it is here that the editors must be complimented on having included all aspects, such as organization, quality of life and litigation. On the other hand, deep venous thrombosis is not treated as well. Although there are chapters on medicinal treatment and air travel, the newer treatments, such as catheter-directed thrombolysis and the use of vena cava filters, are largely ignored. This book can be recommended to the more inexperienced part of the target group but vascular specialists will find most of the text far too basic.
