TY - JOUR AU - Woodthorpe, J. AB - The whisker length distributions that result from dispersive mixing operations in ceramic-whisker composites were evaluated by an optical imaging method. Pretreatment of whiskers with a lubricant was essential prior to the introduction of suspensions into processing machinery. Single screw extrusion was ineffective in dispersing the whiskers while twin screw extrusion produced a blend with mean whisker lengths of 6–10 µm depending on whisker content and processing variables. The damage to whiskers with initial lengths greater than 15 µm was severe in all the processing routes explored.
