E-mail: darja.zavirsek@fsd.uni-lj.si Introduction The longer life expectancy of the populations of developed countries, on the one hand, and poverty, poor working conditions, modern slavery and wars faced by people from poorer and rural countries, on the other, are conditions that dictate that the majority of the world’s population will experience some kind of disability at some time in their lives. At the same time, the involve- ment of social work in rebuilding and recovery following the Tsunami cata- strophes in different parts of the world and the recent earthquake in China have placed issues of disability at the very centre of social work.
