AB - This paper discusses signal processing for the detection of defects in automated inspection using machine vision. A generalized methodology is presented applicable to a wide range of tasks. A method is presented for design of a system to achieve quantitative performance requirements in terms of probability of defect detection versus probability of false alarms. Some modifications which can improve performance of the basic scheme are described. Applications of the method are mentioned briefly.
