Gilbert had an unusual opportunity for daily and intimate con- tac t with the chief defendants at the Nuremberg Trial for a period o f a year. He was assigned as a psychologist to the court and, in the course of his professional duties, he spent most of his time interview- in g the defendants, listening to their conversations, and receiving their complaints , arguments and explanations. He was able to draw par- ticula r advantage from these contacts because he succeeded in estab- lishing very informal relationships with the defendants who met him as persons rather than as actors in a dramatic situation. Dr . Gilbert has already published an account of his activities in The Nuremberg Diary (1947). The major portion of the present study contain s more detailed case histories of Goering, von Papen, Keitel and SS-Colone l Hoess of Auschwitz.
