A funny thing happened to us on our way to the Chen Foong Trading Co., in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, sometime last year. Uri Tadmor and I were in the back seat of a taxi, headed to the shop to order the bags for the 2nd Malay/ Indonesian Linguistics Symposium and the 8th Meeting of the South East Asian Linguistic Society. As we drove, Uri and I were chatting intermittently to each other in Hebrew, and to the driver, who was an ethnic Malay, in Malay. Eventu- ally, we arrived in what seemed to be the right neighborhood, but after going round in circles for ten minutes or so, it became obvious that the address of the shop, and the street signs, were of little use, and that we were lost. So we decided to ask somebody for directions. Moments later, we saw a man walking down the street. “Ask him,” Uri said to the driver.
