TY - JOUR AU - Dimov, I. AB - A. Balevskii and I. Dimov A method of casting with use of back pressure has been developed in Bulgaria. This method differs from other casting methods in the fact that a gas pressure (so-called back pressure) is created in the mold. This pressure, exceeding atmospheric pressure, resists the pressure exerted by the molten metal on the mold material. In various machines a back pressure is characteristically present in the mold and the pouring basin with molten metal located under two separate hermetically sealed jackets. Thus, it is possible to create a pressure on the surface of the melt with use of gaseous phases of various compositions. The new method of melting metals with gases was developed on this basis (for example, stainless steels with as much as 1.5% N). The back pressure process is characterized by the possibility of gradual and even filling of the mold and controlling the casting speed within wide limits regardless of the acting pressure, since it is affected by the difference between the pressure and the back pressure. Thus, one can also control the energy of shape formation, while the surface of the finished castings reproduces the surface of the mold exactly.
