TY - JOUR AU - Lloyd, D A AB - This medium sized book is aimed at trainees preparing for specialty examinations in paediatric surgery in ‘the UK, Europe and Australasia’. The authors are drawn mainly from these regions and the consistent high quality of the text is tribute to the editors. Each chapter has a table of learning objectives; in addition, the clinical chapters include a basic science section and conclude with clinical scenarios illustrating key teaching points, and recommendations for further reading. Some authors have provided references as well, important when data are quoted. Operative details are not within the scope of the book, but some have slipped in. The text is divided into six parts. ‘General principles of care’ includes useful chapters on congenital causes of disease, the child in hospital, communication skills and the child and the law. The remaining parts cover gastrointestinal surgery, thoracic surgery, general surgery of infancy and childhood, oncology and urology. In general, the chapters are of high quality and informative. Perhaps owing to space constraints, some topics are dealt with superficially or not at all, for example caustic ingestion injury and abdominal endocrine tumours. It is difficult to know where to draw the line regarding the scope of a book like this, but it should be noted that 42 of the 64 chapters end with a blank page. The illustrations are clear and informative (Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty is an exception) and some are repeated in colour. Although this book has limitations, it does provide excellent overviews of a wide range of topics relevant to the specialty examination. Copyright © 2006 British Journal of Surgery Society Ltd.
