AB - Multilayer semiconductor devices are used in applications ranging from satellites to compact disc players. However, making such devices is far from easy. For example, growing individual semiconductor layers that are atomically aligned with the underlying substrate can create enormous strains if the semiconductor lattice has a different atomic spacing from the substrate lattice. This strained layer can relax by adding extra lattice planes, or by missing some out, producing misfit dislocations.
