TY - JOUR AU1 - Marenduzzo, D. AU2 - Orlandini, E. AU3 - Yeomans, J. M. AB - We study the switching dynamics in two-domain and four-domaintwisted nematic liquid-crystal devices. The equilibriumconfiguration of these devices involves the coexistence ofregions characterised by different handedness of the inherentdirector twist. At the boundaries between these regions there aretypically disclinations lines. The dynamics of the disclinationlines controls the properties, and in particular the switchingspeed, of the devices. We describe their motion using a numericalsolution of the Beris-Edwards equations of liquid-crystalhydrodynamics. Hence we are able to explain why a conventionaltwo-domain device switches off slowly and to propose a devicedesign which circumvents this problem. We also explain thepatterns of disclination creation and annihilation that lead toswitching in the four-domain twisted nematic device.
