TY - JOUR AU - Buard,, J.-L. AB - Summary 131 patients were operated on for adenocarcinoma of the cardia at the Digestive Surgical Clinic, Bloc Hopital Pontchailou between 1973–1984 inclusive. A total gastrectomy was performed in 48 patients, a partial gastrectomy in 41 patients and exploratory laparotomy or palliative bypass only in 42 patients. The post-operative mortality rate was 12.2% and the overall 5 year survival rate was 11.1%. Analysis of factors which might have influenced survival showed that whether a proximal partial gastrectomy or a total gastrectomy was performed had no effect on survival. TNM staging indicated that absence of nodal and generalized metastases was associated with the best prognosis regardless of the degree of gastric wall involvement by the tumour.
