TY - JOUR AU - Ali Mekouar, Mohamed AB - REPORTS ON INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND BODIES 579 UNEP organized COP-6 to the Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Eastern African Region from 29 March to 1 April in Nairobi, Kenya. Eight countries and terri- tories in the west Indian Ocean region signed the final act, and the Protocol for the Protection of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Western Indian Ocean from Land-Based Sources and Activities was adopted on 31 March by Comoros, France, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tanzania. As Secretariat, UNEP convened the first session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee in June to prepare an international legally binding in- strument on mercury. The aim is to eliminate the use of one of the world’s most toxic heavy metals. In the meantime, the Global Mercury Partnership has been formed to take immediate action on mercury use and release. In 2010, UNEP assisted countries in assessing their own mercury issues, developing national plans for managing mercury waste, examining options to store unwanted mer- cury, as well as examining the socio-economic drivers in the growth of small-scale gold mining.
