Conferences cover different aspects of applied mathematics and scientific computing. They aim at gathering researchers from applied mathematics as well as scientists and engineers applying mathematics, in order to exchange ideas and reinforce partnerships. The fifth Applmath conference was held on Brijuni islands on 9–13 July 2007. 70 participants from 14 countries held 42 lectures. As usual there is a group of invited lecturers, chosen by the organizing committee among distinguished scientists. On this occa- sion the invited lecturers were: Prof. Roland Glowinski, University of Houston, USA, Prof. Andro Mikelic, ´ University Lyon 1, France, Prof. Mariarosaria Padula, University of Ferrara, Italy and Prof. Annie Raoult, Universite Rene Descartes-Paris 5, France. I would like to thank them all. This special issue of Annali dell’Università di Ferrara gives to this conference an even larger impact and I thank the Editor-in-Chief Prof. Mariarosaria Padula for making it possible.
