Recently, however, Spanish-speaking musicologists have begun to call attention to these neg- lected instruments and their repertory. The efforts of Gerardo Arriaga, Cristina Bordas, Beryl Kenyon de Pas- cual, Eusebio Rioja and Jose L. Romanillos in particular, are bringing to light instruments and information that will provide evidence for an accurate, comprehensive history, still to be written, of the Spanish guitar before the advent of Antonio de Torres.' Two recent exhibitions assembled from private and museum holdings have pre- sented many of these previously overlooked instruments to public view for the first time and have stimulated interest in their construction, stylistic evolution and often obscure builders.** In the catalogues of these exhibitions, Jose Romanil- los defined typical aspects of major schools of 18th- century Spanish guitar-making. Within these regional schools, however, individual instruments hold surprises.
