TY - JOUR AU1 - Rumisek, Jay AB - B.V.A. Roling; Antonio Cassese, The Tokyo Trial and Beyond: Reflections of a Peacemonger. Polity Press, Cambridge 1994, vii + 143 pp., paperback, ISBN 0-7456-1485-X This book was published to honor the memory of the Dutch judge, Tokyo Tribunal Judge and scholar B.V.A. Roling. It is mostly comprised of an interview with Roling conducted by Cassese in 1977. Both men intended that it be published at some point, after considerable revisions. In particular, Roling advocated a bolstering of Cassese's views, so that the published work might seem more of a dialogue between equals. But Roling died in 1985, at the age of 79, before any significant changes of the kind were ever made. Cassese did not undertake any such bolstering before publishing this volume, under the rationale that Roling would be unable to comment on any additions. It was a decision well taken, particularly because this book as it is serves as an insight into the views of Roling, whom Cassese describes in his introduction as a "patriarch of the spirit" (p. 7), who was "most forceful and communicative in a dialogue" (p. 8). Once one has read the full dialogue, this description has the ring of truth.
