Case 1 A 57-year-old nursing sister presented to her general practitioner in 1988 with tenesmus and change of bowel habit. Surgical referral followed, with marked polyposis being found on sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Four years earlier the patient had undergone a barium meal, sigmoidoscopy and barium enema for abdominal pain. These were normal. A family history of polyposis was not present. As a result of the 1988 findings proctocolectomy was planned. The patient was referred to St. Mark’s Hospital for assessment of her suitability for pouch reconstruction. Outpatient rectal polyp biopsy revealed inflammatory changes only.
