KAPADIAI Patients EXTRADUCTAL palpation of the common bile duct has been shown to be a reliable method for the identi- fication of the common duct stone (1). Despite strong Female advocacy of peroperative cholangiography (2), this technique has the disadvantage of being time 0 Male consuming, associated with technical failures, especially in the inflamed gallbladder, having frequent false positives (3) and being expensive. Extraductal palpation was used routinely during the period 1967-76 in a consecutive series of 418 patients who had a cholecystectomy . Patients and methods All patients admitted for elective cholecystectomy and emergency admissions with acute or chronic cholecystitis during the years 1967-76 were included, apart from those patients who had established obstructive jaundice. The operation was performed by the senior author, or one of five 0-9 20-29 40-49 60-69 80-89 trainee surgeons under supervision.
