TY - JOUR AU - Raynes, Peter AB - Liquid-crystal displays have been used commercially for around 25 years. They were first used in wristwatches and calculators, but continuous development over the past two decades has resulted in much more sophisticated versions. Liquid-crystal devices now dominate the market for flat, portable displays, and they have enabled the huge growth in notebook and laptop computers. This revolution is set to continue: electronics companies worldwide are continually improving the quality and performance of these devices, and research into large-area displays and so-called system-on-panel is sure to open up new markets for liquid-crystal technology.
