Oxon: Routledge, 2015, 146 pp., £95.00 hardback. Reviewed by Paul Anderson Canterbury Christ Church University This interesting, authoritative, and thought-provoking book endeavors—and successfully so—to attain a better understanding of the dynamics undergirding nationalist parties’ behavior in Spain. With focus on two of the main nationalist parties in Catalonia and the Basque Country—Converge`ncia I Unio´ (CiU—Convergence and Union) and the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV—Basque Nationalist Party), the authors shed light on several dynamics in play: center-periphery relations, nationalist elite centered relationships (including the communities in which they operate) and the influence and impact of substate parties in the state-wide political arena. The book consists of seven chapters. In Chapter 1, Richard Gillespie introduces the topic, lays out the principal research aims—to uncover the dynamics behind the contemporary evolution of the nationalist movements—and offers some insights into the analysis which follows. Gillespie provides a brief yet detailed history of the evolution of CiU and PNV, and charters their progress on the accommodation-sovereignty pendulum. The chapter concludes by drawing together the main findings of the subsequent chapters, with specific reference to TI - Contesting Spain?
