TY - JOUR AU1 - SAWTELL, IVOR, J. AU2 - COOPER,, JANE AB - Abstract In January, 1974, all members of the Society of Occupational Medicine living in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were sent postal questionnaires in which they were asked to give details of their appointments and information about themselves. This paper analyses the replies received. Of the 860 sent out, it was found that 393 (46 per cent) were working full-time and 243 (28 per cent) part-time, in occupational medicine. Seventy (8 per cent) failed to reply, 25 (3 per cent) refused and 117(14 per cent) were no longer practising occupational medicine. Among the full-time doctors 84 per cent were working for one firm only, and 20 per cent were responsible for populations of 10,000 or more. In this same group 85 per cent were aged 40 years or more and only 2 per cent were women. Of the full-timers 55 percent had obtained their DIH.
