CONSTABLE If Natural Law has any goodness, it is goodness as a useful means in guiding men to carry out their supposedly natural inclination to goodness. Natural Law purports to direct men to do good and thus become good men, i.e., become men who attain their natural end. Failing to do this, it is a useless, and in some respects even a harmful system. In our times, it does not appear to judges, lawyers and legislators to constitute such a useful instrument. Indeed its proponents of tern seem to bring discredit on it. Yet it is in fact useful on many basic issues, though its operations are not generally recognized. How- ever, its usefulness is limited. It is not a detailed code. And it has not been helpful in solving many of the great moral issues of the day. The heart of the trouble is its failure to provide any clear and convincing principle ordering priorities among the multitude of discrete goods. The difficulties in arriving at an ordering principle are enormous.
