TY - JOUR AU - Schreiner, George E. AB - Toxic nephropathy is the term officially adopted by the Nephrology Panel of the Committee on Adverse Reactions to describe any adverse functional or structural change in the kidney due to the effect of a chemical or biological product that is inhaled, injected, or absorbed, or that yields toxic metabolites with an identifiable effect on the kidneys. By extension, and by common usage, the term often is extended to include the adverse renal effects that occur when physiological substances are circulated in concentrations markedly greater or less than normal. Such entities would be hypercalcemic, hypokalemic, and hyperuricemic nephropathy. Nephrotoxic nephritis is the other term used most widely in the medical literature to describe this process.
