TY - JOUR AU - Pescia, D AB - We have established point-like contacts between a metallic surface and a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip and generated a localized magnetic field by injecting a current pulse through the contact. The contacts carry current densities on the order of 1013Am2. Magnetic imaging before and after current injection reveals domain nucleation and magnetization reversal on the sub-micrometre spatial scale in ultra-thin magnetic elements of Co and Fe epitaxially grown on Cu(100). This technique offers a way to apply a magnetic field to an ultra-thin sample in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) with nano-scale accuracy.
