I t is even hard to understand what our author can mean when he writes th a t Mazzini " never achieved a social position or popular recognition ” . As to the political and ideological phrases, it is too generally believed th at the fight, in any century, is exclusively among the proponents of the several formulas, whereas it is mainly among divergent interpreters of any single one. Except for a very few clear oppositions, the scrimmage is w ithin the articulate mass, where each individual shouts, ** 1 bear the true faith .” Historians must necessarily group these claims for clear exposition, bu t they must not be deceived by their own or others’ labels, lest captions become captious.
