Is it arrogant to call your book A Textbook of Social Work, even if softened by the indefinite article? Is textbook boring? Then you notice the jacket, plain black except for the upper left quadrant, where there is a paint- ing of a youngish woman, positioned obliquely and looking out of a window (The Laundress by Toulouse-Lautrec). We cannot quite read her expression but are tempted to impute her thoughts and feelings and then to wonder how she relates to the book. So, before we open its pages, this book is unorthodox: no risk-free abstract cover design, no colon and explanatory subtitle to follow the simple, almost bleak title. And when you dip into the book itself? This is quite simply the best read in quite some time. ‘Page-turner’ is a phrase not much associated with a social work book, even less one that professes to be a textbook, but this is one, especially in the early chapters.
