AB - A clip-on voltmeter is described, which permits measurement of the direct voltage on an (unsheathed) insulated single-core cable, without making contact with the cable core. The readings are sensibly independent of the size and type of cable used. The meter is based on a feedback technique, using a vibrating capacitor. The experimental instrument has an accuracy to 2% up to 70 V, with a 25 to 1 variation in `pick-off' capacitance. It is believed that a portable instrument measuring up to about 25 kV could be produced, for use on cylindrical, flat and moving surfaces.
