Romanov, and V. F. Sidorchuk In the foundation engineering practice use is made of piles with enlarged bases formed by blasting (camouflet) or mechanical drilling (bored). The analysis of the bearing capacity of these piles is carried out by applying well-known empirical formulas, in which the pressure distribution under the enlarged base is considered to be uniform over an area equal to the projection of the base on a horizontal plane [1-3]. The results of this analysis are only approximate; for this reason, for large loads it is necessary to deter- mine more precisely the bearing capacity of the pile on the basis of data from static tests. The shortcom- ings of the above-mentioned procedure are connected with the lack of information about the characteristics of the distribution of the soil reactions on the spherical surface of the enlarged base and about the stress state of the soil within the limits of the active zone; this lack of information does not permit taking these characteristics into account in the analysis.
