Stransky Botanisches Institut der Universität Müchen München Deutschland Summary The pigments have been identified and quantitatively determined by methods discussed in Hager and Stransky (1970). 1. In addition to chlorophyll a and the phycobilins Cryptomonas contains only 3 carotenoids. This alga differs from the members of all other classes by the synthesis of the pigment alloxanthin which contains 2 alkinic bonds. 2. Besides the green algae the Euglenophyceae are the only algae, analysed in this study, which contain chlorophyll a and b. The main carotenoid they synthesize, is diadinoxanthin, which is also present in Xanthophyceae, Diatomeae and some Chrysophyceae; they do not contain antheraxanthin, which is typical for green and blue green algae. In the xanthophyll cycle the pigments diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin are involved but not as supposed until now the pigments antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin. 3. Fucoxanthin is the main xanthophyll of the Diatomeae studied; in addition ε-carotene, β-carotene, neoxanthin and an unknown xanthophyll have been found. The light-induced xanthophyll interconversions take place between diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin, just like in Xanthophyceae and Euglenophyceae. 4. Both of the Chrysophyceae studied agree in the pigments chlorophyll a, β-carotene and fucoxanthin. The other carotenoids belong to 2 different pigment patterns. Isochrysis shows the pigmentation, which is typical for Diatomeae. Ochromonas , however, contains the pigments of the hereby analysed brown alga. There is also a difference within those carotenoids, which occur in minor quantities. Based on the occurring pigments, the xanthophyll cycle of Isochrysis is identical with that of the Xanthophyceae, Euglenophyceae and Diatomeae. Yet Ochromonas contains the cycle of the green algae and of the brown alga Laminaria . 5. In Laminaria ε-carotene, β-carotene and fucoxanthin are present, furthermore violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin. The latter 3 pigments are participating in the xanthophyll cycle.
