We harbor no doubt of its harsh materiality or its inevitable arrival. A most natural event, as ordinary as birth or the change of seasons, it still remains for us a great imponderable. Though we know it will come, we find it shocking when it does. We invent myths of immortality to find imaginative ways around it. We embrace heaven, nirvana, and other post-mortem destinations as realms promising to extend the significance of our lives beyond the span that biology or chance has allotted to us. The unexpected passing of Juan Flores on 2 December 2014 prompts us to relive the cycle of shock, asking ourselves how to accept the loss of this esteemed colleague and dear friend. As typically happens with great losses, those who knew him will look in vain for consolation.
