James Polytechnic of the South Bank, London S.E.1 (Institute of Environmental Science and Technology) Introduction Conveyor: The first dynamic mathematical model of a refrigeration system was presented to the Institute of Control Engineers at the UKAC 5th Control Convention, at Bath in 1973. By this time, modelling techniques had become established in other industries; therefore the refrigeration industry was not a forerunner in this field. Four models are presented to show the Evaporators <Usefulness of such techniques. 1. Industrial refrigeration system '\ The quick-freezing tunnel and '\ ammonia refrigeration system (Fig I) typifies a plant that could be used for freezing a variety of vegetables. The load on the system is a fluctuating one, depending mainly on the amount '\ of produce being fed into the refriger­ ____ 't.....-__-----' L_ ated space on the conveyor belt and its temperature. Fig 1. Layout of quick-freezing tunnel The plant (Fig 2) comprises two reciprocating two-stage compressors, each driven by 130 kW induction motors. A capacity controller reduces the number of cylinders operating, as the temperature of the liquid refrigerant entering the evaporators is reduced, by acting to prevent the (/) it- L-
