TY - JOUR AU - AB - Introduction Moroccans in the Netherlands In January 1990, almost 15 million people were living in the Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek 1992). Out of these, 148,000 were of Moroccan and 191,000 of Turkish origin. Together they constitute half of the non-native Dutch population. In 1980, more than 10,000 Moroccans settled in the Netherlands, less than 5,000 in 1984. If the socioeconomic Situation does not change, expectations are that approximately 17,000 Moroccans will have migrated to the Netherlands between 1985 and 1990. Not only the number of migrants but also the social makeup of the migrant groups has changed. As far äs women are concerned, until 1975 mainly young women without children or with only a few small children moved to the Netherlands. Later on the migrant women were mostly elderly, with completed families. In recent years, most immigrants are the young partners of secondgeneration Moroccans living in the Netherlands. The tendency for young Moroccans to look for (Moroccan) partners in the Netherlands is expected to increase (Buitenlanders Bulletin November 1985: 4). Material for the study reported on in this article was mainly collected in Utrecht.
