TY - JOUR AU - Legg, Keith AB - ConclusionBy using both plasma-enhanced deposition and ion beam techniques, coatings of HA can be deposited on nearly any substrate, including low temperature materials. These coatings are chemically and crystallographically correct, as well as being smooth and highly adherent. The combination of these two low temperature processes will permit not only the surface of medical implant devices to be tailored, but the surface of the HA coating as well. For example, under the appropriate process conditions, the top layer of the ion-assisted coating surface can be deliberately made more bioactive to allow some coating resorption for better intergrowth with natural regrown bone. The next step in the development of the process is to determine whether such coatings do indeed fulfill their promise for disguising implants and promoting bone growth to prostheses.
