TY - JOUR AU - Zhang, Jianxun AB - Although people with heroin addiction demonstrate impairment in delay discounting, no studies have explored the effects of drug-related cues on this impairment in this population. The present study aimed to examine the effects of suprathreshold and subthreshold drug-related cues on the level of delay discounting in individuals with heroin addiction. Study 1 recruited 37 male with heroin addiction and 34 male healthy individuals to complete an adapted version of the delay-discounting task. Drug-related or neutral cues of 500ms were presented before cross-selection was performed. Study 2 recruited 35 men with heroin addiction and 33 male healthy individuals who completed an adapted version of the delayed discounting task. Drug or neutral cues were presented for 33 ms with the addition of masked stimuli. The area under the curve values in the supra- and subthreshold drug-related cue conditions were significantly smaller than those in the neutral cue conditions in the group of participants with heroin addiction, but no such differences were found in the control group. This suggests that the level of delay discounting in people with heroin addiction is influenced by supra- and subthreshold drug-related cues, resulting in higher subjective discounting of delayed rewards. This finding may have clinical significance in the prevention of and intervention for heroin addiction.
