The 62nd General Assembly in Paris made the announcement on 20 December 2007, approving a resolution submitted by Italy, home of Galileo Galilei, whose achievements 400 years ago are a focus of the project. The IYA2009 is a joint initiative of UNESCO and the International Astronomical Union. http://www.astronomy2009.org IYA2009 UK From a fabulously rich and talented shortlist, Steve Owens of the Glasgow Science Centre has been appointed as the UK coordinator for IYA2009. He will start in the new post at the beginning of February. http://www.astronomy2009.co.uk Bullerwell Lecture 08 Tavi Murray of the University of Swansea will give the annual British Geophysical Association Bullerwell Lecture in the late afternoon of 7 February 2008. The lecture will be part of the annual BGA two-day “New Advances in Geophysics” This image of colliding galaxies (ESO 593-IG 008, or IRAS 19115-2124) is known as the Bird.
