There are also only passing references to Muslim intellectuals’ debates over democracy and constitutionalism. Emphasizing as it does new cultural currents, the volume also devotes less attention to established institutions and organizations, including Islamic education (one of Muslim Indonesia’s great success stories) and trends within the country’s two massive Islamic welfare organizations, the Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama. In a Muslim-majority country as vast and fast-changing as Indonesia, however, no volume can cover everything. This book succeeds impressively at what it sets out to do: highlight the varied forms of piety and cultural politics in contemporary Indonesia. Well-edited and vividly written, this volume deserves to be read by all those curious about Indonesian Islam in the post-Suharto period. Robert W.
