Ant pupae have been shown to extrude a highly nutritious and hormone-laden secretion, not unlike mammalian milk. The authors who made this discovery speculate that this fluid, common across many ant species, might have played a role in the evolution of ant eusociality. Adults were observed removing and consuming the secretion, and when the adults were prevented from removing the fluid, the pupae devel- oped fungal infections and died. Likewise, when larvae were deprived of access to this secretion, they experienced stunted growth. Snir, O., H. Alwaseem, S. Heissel, A. Sharma, S. Valdés-Rodríguez, T.S. Carroll, C.S. Jiang, J.
