TY - JOUR AU - Sims, R A AB - A method for simultaneous determination of the diffusion coefficient and electrical mobility of single particles suspended in a fluid medium is described. Photon correlation spectroscopy is used in conjunction with a frequency-biased differential laser Doppler velocimeter to monitor the Brownian motion and electrical mobility of individual particles. Measurements are performed by microcomputer-controlled instrumentation at rates up to ten particles per second. Resolution of the electrical mobility measurements is sufficient to distinguish particle electric charge differences of one elementary charge. Results for test aerosols containing 0.36 and 0.82 mu m nominal diameter spheres are presented.
