TY - JOUR AU1 - Stutzman, Byron W. AB - Data Communication Control Procedures BYRON W. STUTZMAN Computer System Architects Incorporated, Cambridge, Massach~sett8 This paper is a tutorial on the methods used to control the transmission of digital information on data communication links. Simple models of data communication systems are introduced and terminology for describing their functions and operation is established. Various graphical methods of representing communication control procedures are discussed and used to describe significant features of communication control procedures in detail. Key words and phrases: communications, communication control, teleproeessing, telecommunications, data communications, data transmission. CR calegory: 3.81 1. INTRODUCTION Data communication technology originated, proliferated, and reached a mature state of development long before electronic digital computers appeared. The attachment of computers to communication networks in the early 1950s provoked a renaissance in data communication development and a renewed proliferation of transmission techniques. The resulting collection of communication conventions, terminology, and folklore appears complex, even baroque, when first encountered by the practitioner of digital computation. This paper surveys some of the more common data communication control techniques and presents them in a generalized fashion emphasizing their commonality of function and purpose rather than their differences.
