After playing such a major role in the establishment of the United Nations and the ideal of collective security embodied within the organisation after the Sec- ond World War, much attention has been placed on the relationship that the United States has had with the rule of law on the international stage. Particularly now, with the United States firmly accepted as being the superpower of our times since the collapse of the Soviet Union, this relationship is perhaps more important than ever. The tragic events of 11 September 2001 and the response of the united states to these attacks increased the scrutiny of this relationship and the role that such a powerful state plays, or should play, in supporting the rule of law in international affairs. Because of the pure military might of the United States, much of this atten- tion has focused on issues connected with this military power, no more so than in the debate surrounding the invasion of Iraq of 2003.
