Chapter one is an introductory chapter in which Anne Pauwels sets up the challenges of managing and maintaining minority languages in Europe and Australia. She highlights issues common to both continents such as the collection of linguistic demographic data, educational provision for minority language speakers and the impact that the spread of English as the global lingua franca has on the management of languages. Balanced against these concerns, she draws attention to the need to examine the transnational aspect of migration and the effect that improved and cheaper transportation and communication TI - Anne Pauwels, Joanne Winter and Joseph Lo Bianco (eds): Maintaining Minority Languages in Transnational Contexts (Palgrave Studies in Minority Languages and Communities) JF - Language Policy DO - 10.1007/s10993-008-9106-7 DA - 2008-09-17 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/springer-journals/anne-pauwels-joanne-winter-and-joseph-lo-bianco-eds-maintaining-1tYN3idj0u SP - 81 EP - 83 VL - 8 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
