TY - JOUR AU - Gong, Ted AB - AMERASIA 7:7 (7980), 73-86 Approaching Cultural Change through literature: From Chinese to Chinese American TED GONG The first Chinese immigrants who came to America attempted to maintain their traditional identity and culture in the new land and society. However, it becomes problematic to continue seeing the second and third generations as essentially Chinese. By adapting to American manners and speech, succeeding gen- erations have departed from Chinese ways and ideas and have changed from the Chinese they were or could have been had they remained in China. For each new generation born and raised in America, this change is even greater. In this essay, we will attempt to trace a pattern of cultural development from Chinese to Chinese American through inter- preting selected works by three major Chinese American writ- ers. Our primary intent is not to argue for any strict interpreta- tion of the literature but rather to show that Chinese American literature can be utilized to illustrate the process of cultural change.
