Gastev The Central Design Bureau of VPMO "Avtomatica", jointly with the All-Union Refractories Institute and the Zaporozh'eRefraetories Plant, has developed and introduced different automatic control systems for tunnel furnaces [1J. Automatic temperature control in the firing zone became possible only after the development of a method [2] for determining the form of temperature control. This method, developed and introduced on a tunnel furnace during firing of standard brick with low charge on cars [3, 4], proved suitable for furnaces with high charge, including molded parts. It was possible to realize the method [2] in a simpli- fied automation system, using series-produced equipment. The system was installed and operated in a tunnel furnace of the chamotte plant of the Zaporozh'e Refractories Plant. The furnace with a length of 120 m and a two-tiered arrangement of burners, in accordance with the 40 cars which it contains, is divided into 40 positions. The clear height of the tunnel is 2.1 m and the width 3.2 m.
