TY - JOUR AU - Torsunov, M. AB - Silica fibers having a chromium-doped alumina-rich core have been produced by the MCVD process, and their optical properties have been studied. The results demonstrate that increasing the alumina concentration from 6 to 29 mol % increases the percentage of Cr3+ ions in the fiber core and reduces that of Cr4+ ions. Prolonged heat treatment has been shown to increase the room-temperature near-IR luminescence intensity in the fibers. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data indicate that high-temperature heat treatment of the fibers leads to the formation of a crystalline mullite phase in the aluminosilicate glass.
