TY - JOUR AU - Zhai, Wanming AB - As a crucial component for delivering traction power in rack vehicles, multi-stage transmissions have more complex dynamic characteristics because of the coupled interactions among numerous transmission parts, which will directly affect the stability or even safety of power transmission of rack vehicles. Thus, deep insight into the dynamic interaction between the gear transmissions and rack vehicle–track coupled systems is urgently necessary to prevent the induced disastrous consequences. This paper proposed a rack vehicle–track coupled spatial dynamics model where the dynamic effects of the gear transmissions are considered. In this model, the time-varying mesh stiffness and the coupling behaviours among different transmission parts in the vertical, lateral, longitudinal and rotational motion are fully included. Subsequently, further investigations have been conducted on the dynamic effects of the transmission system on the vehicle–track coupled system. Furthermore, some complicated dynamic excitations, such as the gear-rack time-varying mesh stiffness and the rail geometrical irregularity, are considered in this study. The reliability of the proposed model is finally validated by comparisons with the field test data. The simulated results reveal that the gear transmission system has strong dynamic interactions with the gear-rack engagement process, and the gear transmission significantly affects the longitudinal vibrations of the wheelsets on the rack bogie. Meanwhile, it should be noted that the wheel loads and the gearbox suspension device loads are affected by the presence of the gear transmission.
